Portieux Vallerysthal Blue Opaline Sherry Set

This assembled set of three sherry glasses and two decanters are from the 19th Century. Portieux Vallerystall is a historic, French glassworks renowned for its beautiful opaline glassware characterized by its milky appearance. Portieux (established in the 18th century) and Vallerystall (established in 1836) merged in 1870 in the Lorraine region in France. The famous opaline glass is opaque but when next to light it becomes somewhat translucent and sometimes shows a “ring of fire”, a bluish, red hue around the edges in bright light due to the manufacturing process. The glasses and decanters are all hand painted in 22k gold with stars and stripes. The bottom of the glasses and signed PV for Portieux Vallerystall. The set is in good condition.

This is one of those rare vintage bar sets that feels both decorative and functional — substantial enough to live out on display, yet perfectly suited for entertaining. Use it for sherry or aperitifs, or repurpose the decanters for cordials, dessert wine, or even as sculptural accents on open shelving.
