Opaline is a semi-opaque glass originating in France from 1810-1890 that features a milky or crystalline look with a beautiful turquoise to cerulean blue. This beautiful cerulean blue example has hints of translucency when held to the light and an applied 22k gold rim. The translucency is created by adding opacity agents like bone ash or metal oxides to the glass mixture during the manufacturing process. Blue opaline is highly prized and collected. This compote/bowl is in very good condition.
Traditionally used for fruit or sweets, this compote bowl works just as well as a decorative centerpiece. We love it styled on a dining table, layered into a bar vignette (great for serving nuts!), or placed on a console or coffee table.
Part of the The Bar Top Shop x Two Webster collaboration — a curated selection of vintage barware sourced by the co-owners of Mélange, a collaborative shopping experience in Osterville, Massachusetts. Together, we love bringing one-of-a-kind vintage finds out of the past and into your home, ready to be used, styled, and enjoyed again.
