How I Style Built-Ins for My (Real) Life

Search built-in or bookshelf style online and you can easily find perfectly styled spaces that do not reflect real life living. These images are great for inspiration but are usually designed for a photo op. At least this is my opinion....

Often, built-ins are found in busy zones of your home -- family room, kitchen nook and home office. Many of us have momentos and photos we want to incorporate into these spaces to make them feel personal and homey. I love to mix in children's artwork and family photos with books and objets. Pro tip: use a gorgeous bone box on your shelf to hold snapshots and other mementos. When putting designing your shelves, be sure to vary displays by height, patterns and colors. Play around with different looks and see what feels good to you. This is your space -- make it a reflection of your personality!

In my home, I incorporate cute momentos made by my children. These pieces are old now but remind me of when they were young. Their art also serves as conversation starters - when the kids are home they like to reminisce about the pieces and a funny story about that time in 4th grade ceramics, or such.... Family photos can do the same thing - spark a memory of a vacation, a sporting event, and loved ones.
